for engine thermostat replacement the estimated parts and labor are about $100-$120. My independent auto shop quoted about $220, perhaps they misunderstood what I needed, is the estimate of $100+ fair?

The thermostat on this engine should take no more than one hour of labor, and that should include draining and refilling the cooling system.
The coolant and the thermostat should run about $40.00 in parts and around $80.00 - $100.00 in labor max. Is it possible they are replacing a coolant hose or flushing the coolant system? If it is merely a thermostat replacement, they are charging quite a lot, and I'm sure you'll find a better price if you call around. This is a very simple repair, so any shop can perform this.

The thermostat on the 06 5 cylinder engine is located on the left side of the engine
sandwiched between the alternator and the A/c compressor. and conected to the
bottom radiator hose. Very dificult to get to. I had to remove the Battery and left front wheel to access the bolts. Took me 5 hours. I have a Hummer H3
