2001 Pontiac Grand Am Question: parking brake will not stay on. has tension but the button has popped out,

If I hold my brake up it will hold the car but the brake handle itself will not stay in place. Is this difficult to fix

    I would recommend to replacing that button it's not really that difficult to replace
    I think that part is a dealers item.
    If you opened up your center Console.theres four bolt holding down hand brake.

    You may need a new ratchet (handle) assembly. It isn't difficult, the center console has to come out. If you strugle for room to move around pulling one of the front seats makes it much easier to do.

    try replacing the whole assm as it may all be worn out
