I would suspect a partially restricted radiator or a mildly blown head gasket. It may be wise to do a "block check". It is a chemical check that is quick and inexpensive to perform. It checks for the presence of carbon monoxide in the cooling system which would only be present if the head gasket was not sealing properly. I presume the cooling fan is working correctly.
