Today the engine symbol came on in my car. I drove it for about 40 minutes. After I parked slight hot air was visibly coming from under the hood, there was a mild burnt smell as well with a hissing sound. Any ideas what this means and how much this will cost me? Thank you.

If the engine overheated, and you continued to drive it for 40 minutes, you most likely will have literally destroyed the engine and potentially many other components. Are you sure the engine overheated? Did the temp gauge indicate a high temp condition? What do you mean by "Slight hot air was visibly"? Steam? Any dripping fluids under the car?
