Are you using more gas than normal, gas mileage not so good. Have the fuel system tested, injectors. Possible rings washed, causing gas smell in oil, and oil loss, if no oil leaks.

Should be running rough and a light on in the dash if it's running rich enough to fuel foul the engine oil and have black smoke from exhaust! All used oil smells a little like gas! Was it thinned out and just running off the dip stick? Oil should be over-full if gas has mixed in it. How long since your last engine service, how many miles? Maybe you just need to let a mechanic check this oil before you do 'anything' else!
