Question: oil on top of engine

 Rookie

the volvo is a late 93 there is oil on top of the engine and under the plastic volvo cover its all in the spark plug cylinders.... im thinkin its the valve cover gasket but i dont know how hard it would be to remove them and if it just isnt the oil cap i need a repair book or some one tlk me through the steps if that is possible its my only vehicle it still runs but i need help

    first off clean the thing real good "purple power and power washer at coin op car wash" .... then after clean find the problem easier... also flour helps to find leaks and washes off easy. as for valve cover gaskets... one of the simplest repairs, yet be sure to clean old gasket and follow tightening pattern and tourque.

    This one doesn't have a valve cover gasket, but a 2 piece cyl. head and it is NOT a simple repair. If you remove the upper half the cams will move. Do some research on it.

    It does not have the usual valve cover gasket, but a 2 piece cylinder head. Don't attempt to remove the top-half of the cyl. head without the special tools and shop manual.
    The most common leak is at the oil cap. Replace the seal ring in the cap, clean off the top and see if the leak stops.
    I'd also remove the breather hose and make sure the screen is removed from the flame trap.

    i Have cleaned up the engine many times before and started the car but when it idles while sitting it doesnt spray oil on top of the engine it only does when you drive it??
