BMW X3 Burning Smell or Oil Drips on the Ground Due to Engine Oil Leak

(58 reports)

Valve cover gasket leaks are common after 60,000 miles. Symptoms will include oil drips under the vehicle and burning oil smell from the engine compartment.

Smelled the engine at first. Once I actually spotted smoke after parking on an incline. Took it into European Automotive here in Atlanta. Gaskets (valve cover gasket) were just old and thus leaking oil onto other parts of the engine which in turn caused the smell and smoke. They entire bill came to around $2,400 but included getting new front brakes ($500) a radiator hose ($200) and some other little stuff. Even subtracting that stuff out, it was over $1K to repair. -
Burning swell of oil after engine has been running for awhile. No visible sign of oil leaks on the ground -
Within a period of 15 months I have had the same problem come up where an engine oil leak was diagnosed as coming from the valve cover gasket(at 51,000 and 59,000 miles.) Both times the evaporator was found to be leaking and was replaced, as well as, 5 gasket rings. Fortunately in both instance I was covered by an extended warranty which greatly reduced the cost to me. -
I have a BMW X3. I got an oil change. Shortly after, a month or two later. I started to smell something burning. I took it into the dealer since I had a warranty, and they told me I had a leak. They in turn sent it to the BMW dealer. -
Fixed the cap, but mechanic said he can't count/find how many leaks there are. Great. I am embarrassed to park anywhere but the street. -

Massive oil leak on way to town in winter. Had smelled oil intermittently before but barely noticeable. No spots on ground before the major leak. Parked until now (spring). Lots of oil on underside and exhaust. No idea where it's coming from. No problems with this vehicle until this. -

We have replaced oil filter housing - know being told valve cover is also leaking. In addition springs were replaced and engine mount bolts broke. All of this before 74,000 miles. All mataince has been done by the dealer. -
oil leak (to me quite a lot) observed on garage floor. Not from VCG but from oil pan. Cost me $2000 to replace the gasket (the mechanic said BMW changed to a new design)...mostly labor (major dismantle) to access the pan. -
Small leak at the rear of the engine. -
Oil filter housing leak and oil pan also has some oil seaping out. Had a leak about 10,000 miles ago along with a leaky head gasket. Seems it could be a decent car until it hits the century mark -
