oil leak on 2003 Jeep Liberty

Oil leaking appx 3 quarts every 3000 miles. appx 176,000 miles but no visable smoke or olly residue from tailpipe. Strong oil smell at times like its oil driping on hot exhaust. Smell not there all the time and occasionally see smoke coming from under hood. See some minor oil from back bolt on passenger side valve cover but doesn't appear to be enough to cause that much oil to leak. Never any oil on garage floor or anyplace else visable on engine.

Hi, You'll probably need to have someone look at this to see where the oil is leaking from, and have that repaired. After the repair, look to see if the engine continues to use oil, and if it does, you may have another problem. When my husband touched the oil filter, it was lose & he was able to tighten it by hand. Could that be the source of such a large leak? I am afraid to drive it now.
