I would first connect a scan tool and view the sensor voltage,most of the times it is out of spec because it has been contaminated with liquid fuel which the root cause can be overfilling of fuel tanks or water intrusion,and the occasional no good reason failure.A good visual inspector of all the evap components can go a long way also! I have found many ripped out canisters from curb hopping cop cars to road kill snagging wiring.
