The fuel pump is must likely failing in your 2002 GMC Yukon XL 1500. Knocking on the fuel tank kick started the electric fuel pump which is inside. I would suggest you have you vehicle checked by a qualified repair shop before it leaves you stranded again. Please use the RepairPal estimator to find out the cost to replace your fuel pump, here is the link - http://repairpal.com/estimator?car_type_id=5485

strangely, gas was below 1/4! however, took truck for service and $800 later - a new fuel pump. more bad news today as my wife was filling with gas to find the tank leaking all over under the truck - probably 10 gallons wasted. At 3 bucks a gallon, was like throwing money out of the window. FUrther, the gauge is not registering any gas althoguh the tank is "full" - at least whatever did not spill out under the car

I have the same problem. You can't let it get under a quarter tank of gas; that's when the problem arises. it's kind of like... if you have a bubble that has formed at the top of a plastic milk jug and you try to pour the milk -- it doesn't pour until the bubble bursts. That's what you're doing when you bang on the tank; you're popping that bubble so gas can flow freely again.
