Question: Not being a mechanic, how do I know what to diagnose it at first sign of problem?

 Rookie

My van still starts and attempts to run. How do I know for sure that when it over heats and then cools down and starts running again that it is the head gaskets?
May be there was another issue like needing motor oil because it was low. How do you know for sure?

    I am not sure what your concern is, does your van over heat? If so, then the cooling system needs to be checked. If the van cuts off when it warms up, that could be an ignition module or a bad pick-up in the distributor.

    Check for codes, that will really help you.
