1997 Jeep Wrangler Question: noisie 5 speed

it just sounds like i hear a roaring or whineing.a mec friend says all the bearing in trans are bad.shifts and goes down the road fine.HELP.it is a manual trans.

    If your mechanic says the transmission bearings are worn out, he certainly could be right. If it were mine and I didn't want to repair it right away, I'd change the transmission oil. That will help it to last longer before you can't drive it anymore.

    I agree with Superbob and just want to add that I have seen mechanics who misdiagnosed bad pilot bearing noise - even release bearing noise with tranny problem.
    Does the sound changes when you apply the clutch?
    Drain and collect the oil in a clean- possible black plastic pan and check it for metal particles before you remove it. If the fluid is clean the tranny might be good. Remove it, and check the pilot bearing- it's at the end of the crank shaft.
