Noises on 2000 Mitsubishi Galant

Hi, The car am looking to buy, has only 56k miles on it. and i wld b the 4th owner as per carfax. test drive showed me that the car actually gives good noise and creaking when i release or press the brakes. also when driving the car seems to have a low rumbling noise which i havent heard in other cars. if i drive fast and suddenly put brakes the car takes some time to halt. Any idea about the noises? is it the brakes or the engine ? Timing belt has not been replaced yet.

None of the problems you describe should have anything to do with the timing belt, though if the belt has not been changed in 9 years, it's probably a good time to do that. The noises and problems braking are a definite concern, and I would highly recommend getting a technician to look at the car for you before purchasing it. You want to make sure that there is not a lot of repair work that needs to be done to make the brakes perfect.
