when I apply the brakes I get a mechancial clanking sound. it does not happen in reverse. Also the ABS light comes on every once in a while when I start the car, could it be a fuse? So far I have not had any braking/stopping problems

Sounds like the ABS system is activating, causing the noise. Have the ABS system checked, if the light is coming on you may have a fault stored in the ABS Control Module that could help determine the cause of this problem. This can sometimes be caused by dirty ABS Wheel Speed Sensors.
