At 35 mph, the spedometer started jumping around like crazy, the truck started to slow down although I did not move the accelerator. The digital odometer went blank, the radio cut off. The engine was still running but the vehicle kept slowing down even with the accelerator all the way to the floor. When it dropped to 5 MPH, I heard it backfire once when I was pumping the gas. I turned off the headlights and the engine surged and regained a little bit of power. I turned off the vent fan and the engine regained more power. I was able to limp home in this condition. I let it idle after I got home and it idled rough but stayed even. The odometer came back on but the radio still won't work. After it idled for about ten minutes, the battery light came on. What happened?

bad battery or alternator not charging enough to charge battery

Thank you, you are spot on the money. It turned out to be a bad alternator. My truck was running on only battery for I don't even know how long. We were able to change it right in the driveway, so no towing was necessary. Thank you again for your advice. C.
