Air Bag Warning Light May Come On Due to Corrosion at the Front Crash Sensor
Body, Interior & Misc., January 26, 2009
RepairPal Expert Overview
Our Quick Take:
The air bag system uses "crash" sensors that monitor the vehicle and detect an impact that requires air bag deployment. Some of these sensors are located in the front of the vehicle. The front crash zone sensor is located in an area that can build up with road salt and debris. This can cause corrosion to build up around the front crash sensors, and cause an interruption of electrical signal. If this happens, your air bag light will come on and the air bag system will not operate in a collision.
What Should You Do?
We at RepairPal have designated this a medium priority recall; this would change to high if the air bag light comes on. Please contact your Nissan dealer. They will check to see if your specific vehicle is affected and advise you on what to do next. Always have your vehicle identification number (VIN) handy when you call.
The air bag crash sensors located in the front zone may have corrosion buildup due to a high level of road salt exposure. If this happens, the sensor may become inoperative, and the air bag light will come on. If this happens, the air bags will not deploy in a collision. This recall began on January 26, 2009.
