Nissan Altima - gas smell and check engine light peridocially-why? on 2002 Nissan Altima

The car idles a little rough and every now and then the check engine light comes on and sometimes there is a smell of gas can anyone tell me what could be causing this and how to fix or check it? We do not have money to take it to a dealer or shop - we had it two places already and they both say something totally different with a price of 600-2000. Times are to tough to afford that. Please help!

EVAP vent selenoid is malfunctioning. this component can be found usually in the back of the vehicle near the fill line to the gas tank. Its primary function is to maintain a vacuum in your gas tank. In order to verify that it has failed try taking the gas cap off when the purge selenoid is active ,yor should here a vacuum trying to pull the cap back on if not crimp the rubber line leading to it. then pull your gas cap and listen for a rush of vacuum. if this dose not happen then your purge seleniod buy the engine could be faulty or a leaky gas cap or the vapor canister is plugged or leaking . the main reason for failure on this emission system is due to a leak or bad component. I do not own a nissan so you may want to get a diagram for your evap system on google images. Not to change the subject but gas smell are not always caused buy the evap system so make sure you have the car scanned at a auto part store they will do it for free. Make sure you check under the hood for gas leaks by the injector on the fuel rails for this will cause a strong gas smell to
