Question: New battery and alt. but not charging. any ideas.

 Rookie

Just got the car. three small wires to alt. look like they got hot. I disconnect battery and it dies. are there any fusable links or relays in the charging system?

    Replace alt. wire connector. Do not remove batt. cable with engine running. Doing so is bad news for an alternator.
    Yes i know, that is the test used for years, now it is not a good thing to do! Check it with a volt meter at the batt.

    check for power going to the alternator

    #1 & #2 Both- Replace pigtail (soldering would be best) Then test for power from 'signal' wire to alternator. Needs that signal in order to 'energize' regulator.
