I have an 06 jeep commander 4.7L V8!! Started running hot, oil seems to be fine and not holding water. Last few days I have cranked it up and it sounds awefull at first. Now running hot again and is heater is not working. last time I cranked it... it blew out Blue smoke from rear but cleared up within seconds!! Can you Help?

YOU NEED TO HAVE IT CK'D THERE ARE SEVERAL WAYS BUT I DON'T THINK YOUHAVE THE MEANS. THERE IS A CHEMICAL TEST FOR HYDRACARBONS IN THE COOLING SYSTEM YOU CAN BUY,ALSO YOU CAN CK IT WITH A SMOG MACHINE.A HEADGASKET CAN BE LEAKING 2 WAYS HYD CARBONS IN COOLING SYSTEM OR OIL IN WATER.SEEK A DIAG FROM A MECHANIC

Blue smoke out the tailpipe sounds like oil, if the oil seeps into the cylinders thought the valve guides or worn guide seals when you first start the engine from cold the engine may run rough and emit large plumes of blue smoke out the exhaust. A blown head gasket may put white smoke out the exhaust and small sweet. The most accurate way to test for a blown head gasket on a gasoline engine is to test for the presence of carbon monoxide in the cooling system. Snap-On, Matco (part # CO 2000), and Napa sell a tool to check to carry out this test. Another link to a supplier of this tool is http://www.etoolcart.com/combustion-leak-detector-lis75500.aspx. Signs of a blown head gasket are coolant loss (frequently have to top up the coolant level of the engine without seeing an obvious leak), experiencing over heating or rough engine running or the presence of white sweet smelling steam from the exhaust. A badly blown head gasket may allow engine coolant and oil to mix.
