1995 Volkswagen GTI Question: Need help with tranny for 1995 VW GTI VR6

I just bought a 95 GTI VR6. the guy sold it to me very cheap because something is wrong with the gears. If you put it in reverse it goes foward. when its in a foward gear, the stick can move from 1st to 5th gear side to side freely. Like it only has one gear, and that gear is like 3rd so you have to give a lot of gas to get it going. What do you think it is? The car has 91,000 miles and the check engine light and change brake pad light is on

Obviously the car has transmission problems, the transmission will have to come out to be rebuilt. A Check Engine Light and a brake warning light also on, I would suggest bringing the car to a shop that specialize in VW. Get them to to do an overall inspection of the car before you put a lot of money into this car. Did you get service records or any maintenance records for the car? Your car will be due a Smog Certificate prior to registration transfer, the California DMV won't allow a Smog Test to be done on your car with the Check Engine Light on.

its the linkages - 32 $ for a plastic linkage connector - a comon problem , do not remove tranny, and certainly do not pay for a rebuild -
