Have 1989(not 4x4). Went to start it and starter wasn't working. I replaced the starter and now nothing. Only clicks, Battery is charged, cables tight. Just getting a spinning sound when the starter spins. Is something wrong with new starter or do I need to look elsewhere?

Sounds like the starters drive is not engaging (not jumping out when it is energized). Remove and bench test

WHAT DID THE OLD STARTER ACT LIKE? NO SOUND, JUST CLICK OR WHAT? WITH TRANS IN PARK OR NET. AND PARK BRAKE ON JUMPER BATT. POS. TO SMALL WIRE ON STARTER ENG. SHOULD TURN IF BATT. FULL CHARGE AND CABLE GOOD!
IF IT DOES NOT THEN STARTER IS DEFECTIVE!! USE A WIRE ABOUT 12 TO 14 GA. FROM BATT. POS. TO SMALL WIRE ON STARTER.
IF YOU CAN, HOOK TO STARTER FIRST THEN TOUCH BATT. POS.
