It was obvious that a hose or something had burst. I had it towed to a local dealership that I had never used. They called me later and said that the expansion chamber had burst and they had replaced it. That seems to be too simple a solution for a vehicle like this to suddenly get that hot. Are their other things that could have also malfunction to cause this. I am on the road a lot and don't want to be in the middle of nowhere and get stuck.
My temperature gauge went to hot and steam came from under hood. Coolant dumped. on 2007 BMW X3

Molded plastic tank. For your sake , hopefully it was just that simple.

Thank you for your response. They said they pressure tested the system after they put the new tank on. I am still going to watch it closely though.
