2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Question: my engine temp gauge wont work in cold weather

engine temp gauge wont work in cold weather and the cooling fans come on, when i turn off the car. when the weather warms up everything goes back to normal.

    This sounds like your engine coolant temperature sensor needs to be inspected. Do you ever have a check engine or service engine soon light coming on?
