Question: my check engine light is on and now the blue coolent temp gauge came on

just bought this used vehicle, my boyfriend took it for a test drive and the idilling off the car was off. the needle would go up and down while driving. the check engine light was on when we bought it, but my boyfriend said it wasnt a big deal its probably something minor. well now a blue temp. gauge re appeared a few days later,it keeps coming on here and there. whats the deal?

    YOU ARE PROBABLY OVERHEATING THATS WHY THE BLUE LIGHT IS COMING ON. THE CK ENG LIGHT IS PROBABLY YOUR OVERHEAT SENSOR TELLING YOU THE COMPUTOR IS SEEING HIGH TEMPS. CK COOLANT LEVEL AND TOP OFF AND LOOK FOR LEAKS, THERE WILL BE ONE. NEXT TIME DON'T LISTIN TO HIM AND HAVE IT CK'D OUT BY A MECH B4 YOU PURCHASE
