Drivability and Transmission issues - Probably ECM/PCM bad, have it checked.

I took it through inspection in Connecticut it passed. When I tried doing inspection in new Jersey it failed. Nj is emissions only the 1 guy was on passenger side under hood when they did test they didn't just plug in under dash I dont know if he blew a coil pack or maybe even the ignition control module? I replaced a couple parts cleaned the maf sensor now it runs great it just won't shift outta gear or when it does I'm going 30mph before it bangs into 2nd hard once it hits drive its fine if I have to slow down enough for it to downshift into first it acts like its gonna stall when I try to accelerate I can't find an egr valve anywhere on this car 1 mechanic said yes it has a egg valve another mechanic said no egg valve its an egr solenoid I can't find that either if the next mechanic says it needs thousands in transmission work in just gonna scrap it only has 83 some thousand miles on it

You asked for advice. You try to explain your experience with other mechanics, you ask about the EGR valve, you talk about emission testing. Do You really think I have not seen any of these things. I gave you some good advice, It is your opportunity to take my advice, or spend more time and money guessing, or trash the car. I read your symptoms/descriptions and what controls all of these. I can plug into your computer and read every pin or circuit that it processes.

Wheres ecm/pcm located? Just thought maybe if they blew a coil maybe that would keep it from shifting?? Or if the egr valve valve aent that would cause it to never shift

Never mind you just don't understand, you don't have the tools or equipment. Good Luck.

My mechanic is ase certified but because he's not an emissions repair facility he said he can't touch my car for 45 days or he can get some hefty fines just thought if its something stupid like an egr valve I could change that and save money not paying a mechanic to do the work i just cant find an egr valve this Buick engine is like sideways grrrrrr

OK 1 more time; Do you think your talking to a novice? I have been an ASE Master for many years, and have ran my own Auto Service Center for almost as many years. You don't want to pay a Mechanic and that's how I make my living. I do this to try and help you and others for FREE. Now forget about the damn EGR, it will "not" cause the problem you are having. The most common problem you are having is usually because of the PCM/ECM. Your car is very outdated compared to the ones we are working on now, I have forgotten the simplicity of these. I can't diagnose the problem over the internet, but I can hook up a car like yours, and read every pin in that computer, and the values of every circuit in that computer as well. Like I told you the best way to diagnose and fix your car is to have the computer checked. I'm not sure you will listen to me, because you haven't yet. Obviously you need a Mechanic/Technician's help with this and stop banging your head against the wall. Once again forget about the Damn EGR Valve, that has nothing to do with your shifting problem!!!!!!!

I looked up ecm on advanceautoparts.com for my car says they have 2 1 is $99.99 other is $139.99 not to bad thats the computer for the car correct? I know usually theirs a hump under one of the seats and the computer is buried under their I haven't had the time to locate it on this century yet. But i think its under the hood drivers side up by windshield. And if i buy a new ecm isnt their a chip or something in the back of the old ecm i have to put into the new ecm? Thanks so much for your help buying new ecm this friday if it seems to hard of a job ill pay to have it replaced usually if its just a couple bolts and plugs ill attemp to repair it myself fingers crossed I'll update after i replace that part :-) thanks again

I hope that's all your problem. Wished you would run the data first, but if you go that way first then the computer is behind the glove box. The prom is under the metal cover. Remove screws and be very careful taking it out it will break. Plastic. Put in the replacement the same direction it was in the old one. Make sure you touch a metal ground before touching it. Static electricity will ruin it. Good luck.

i have a couple more questions I've been to 3 different auto parts stores asking about ecm for my buick century special 3.3 v6 my transmission goes 1,2,D thats a 3 speed rite? The people at parts stores are telling me a 3 speed doesn't run off the computer a 4 speed does a 3 speed dont i picked up a code scanner it's saying no codes the people at parts stores are telling me by my symptoms it could be a torque converter control solenoid locked up or it could be a shift solenoid :-( thank you
