my car won't start after I just replaced the distributor cap and rotor on 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

What happens when I try to start the car is the engine won't turn over and then the alarm system starts going off

Make sure you didn't put it on wrong. Could be 180 degrees off, in which case car won't start. Either that or check the coil wire, or plug wires. Sometimes the wires pull out of their boots, especially when using old wires. Take your time, have plenty of light and trace your previous steps. Go with the obvious first, if you changed the rotor and distributor cap, and it ran fine before then, then something is disconnected or simply installed wrong. Make sure your distributor cap metal clip hold/downs are fully engaged. I don't know how many times I thought they were fully engaged and they weren't.. Made me crazy!!!!!! Hope I helped.
