If its a manual transmission it may b the shift linkage that has worn bushings. Manual or automatic transmission it may also be a sign of an internal transmission problem. If it is a manual transmission try putting the transmission into Reverse before starting the engine, with your foot on the clutch pedal then start the engine and release the clutch pedal does it now select reverse if so it is an issue with the clutch not adequately breaking the drive between the engine and transmission.
