My 1993 subaru loyale just won't start sometimes. usually happens when parked on flat surface. automatic gears won't shift. wheel seems to lock then unlock. when i push the gear release...shift lever will move, but still won't start even in neutral. when i'm about ready to call a tow truck, then all of a sudden it starts on its own. been told it may be the linkage, then told maybe the neutral safety switch...but when its looked at it always starts then....been told it might have to completely leave me stranded before someone will know what this is.....help

Just from what you say about moving the gearshift around not helping, I'm suspicious about the starter failing. Put a meter or testlight on the START wire on the starter. It should show battery voltage when your assistant turns the key to START. If it does and the starter doesn't go, then the starter's faulty. If the wire fails to show battery voltage when the assistant turns the key, then there's a problem in the START circuit. Go from there.. Should be easy.
