I have a 1997 chevy malibu. About a year ago I got this car from a family member who probably didnt take good care of it. For a couple months now me and my boyfriend have been hearing this loud clunking noise and a sound that almost sounds like a gallon of water been chugged out. It happens a couple times at least everytime we drive. Just recently it has started to over heat very easily. Not so much short distances but anything longer than driving 30 minutes we have to pull over for like 5 minutes to let it cool down. When I got this car there was an alert signal on the dash that is not in the manual and no one seems to know what it is, its a square box with and arrow pointed down and a line below the arrow inside the box? Anyone know???!

If the warning light is red chances are the is the low coolant indicator on your 1997 Chevrolet Malibu. Now it sounds like you may have a head gasket issue causing your overheating condition. I would recommend a complete diagnoses of the engine and its cooling at this time.

I have an 02 malibu and I've had so many problems with the engine.. that box with the arrow pointing down is the radiator fluid level light. I had that issue ((without the sloshing sound)) and it ended up being my radiator fluid sensor or whatever it's called. good luck. I've had problem after problem with this car but been problem free for almost a year :)
