my car makes a whining noise when i crank it. on 2004 Mercedes-Benz S500

when I crank it this whining sound comes from under the hood....everything else seems to be working find. Its not loosing compressing and the trans is changing as it should. Steering is find....just that noise....any idea what it may be? Thanks

Belt idler pulleys are known to whine.

Belts can create a whining sound, but so can the power steering pump. Often times, even if the power steering pump is making a whining noise, the steering itself will still be fine.
