Question: my car is reving itself up..then slowing almost to a stall

My 1996 taurus reves itself up..then slows to almost a stall then revs up again.also smoke comes from the back of the motor and smells like oil

    You probably have two different issues that are probably not related. The idle issue may be due to a lean fuel mixture concern.The engine control system is most likley trying to compensate by raising the idle. Is the check engine light on? If so, respond with the diagnostic trouble codes for more assistance.
    The smoke may be a valve cover gasket leaking on the exhaust manifold.

    My car is doing the same thing. What did you find out? is it save to drive the car with the service engine light on?
