P0172 = System too rich bank 1 which is the side of the engine with the #1 cylinder for a V-6, or V-8. On a 4 cyl engine the code effects the whole engine. How clean is your air filter?

The PCM sets the too rich code because it is beyond the limits of adjustment the pcm has. Other possibilities include excessive fuel pressure, leaking injectors, clogged IAC valve or passage, malfunctioning TPS, MAF, MAP or ECT sensor, malfunctioning EGR system, restricted exhaust, or malfunctioning canister purge system, or a lazy oxygen sensor, according to the Haynes manual. A sweet smell from the exhaust usually indicates burning antifreeze, as in a blown head gasket.
