The front brake pads should last at least 30,000 miles on manual transmission car (perhaps a little less on an automatic transmission car). Many people can get 50,000 miles from a set of brake pads. Premature brake pad wear can be due to aggressive driving/braking characteristics, poor quality brake pads, brake caliper dragging (partially seized brake calipers or caliper guide pins that don't allow the brake caliper to slide freely). Another thing that can cause the brakes to drag and wear prematurely is if the brake master cylinder was replaces and the brake master cylinder push rod was not properly adjusted. The front brake pads should wear evenly on both front wheel set of brake pads and the brake pad friction material should wear parallel to the metal backing plate that carries the friction material.
