Could any one give me any pointers on where to start at to figure out why this happened??

A few things that was happening was:
The air conditioner would suddenly go hot then blow out cold air at any given time.
Sometime the belt would squeal upon start up but would quiet down when car warms up.

Belts do wear out and break. As they wear, they stretch- this lack of proper tension can cause belt squeal. But, you could also have a belt driven accessory that is beginning to fail that will cause the belt to slide over the pulley also causing the squeal noise (and subsequent belt failure). Have a reputable shop check the pulleys/accessories for free movement and check the belt tensioner.
