It could be many things, unfortunately and without experiencing the problem first hand or being able to do some basic diagnostic tests its hard to say. Could be a vacuum leak, could be an ignition or fuel supply problem could even be a slipped timing belt but it would be foolish to jump to conclusions without doing basic tests.

Has been running great (over 280K miles) Now, if I let my foot off the gas it stalls. What basic tests can I perform? Sorry, to sound ignorant but not very knowledgeable about engines and was hoping somebody could tell me where to start. Thanks, for replying ...

I would say to start by cleaning the MAF sensor (mass airflow) and check pcv valve and pcv hose. The hose may have failed and pinched shut.
