The steering motor sensor may fail, resulting in loss of power steering assist from the electric power steering system. Dealers will check the power steering control module (PSCM) for any trouble codes and replace the steering gear for vehicles that have codes relevant to the concern stored. If no codes are found, dealers will update the PSCM software free of charge to resolve the concern.
Certain vehicles are being recalled because the upper intermediate steering shaft could separate resulting in loss of steering control. This recall includes models previously recalled under campaign #13V-385, these vehicles may have been incorrectly repaired. Dealers will inspect and replace the upper immediate shaft if necessary. If the steering column lower bearing has separated, a retainer clip will be installed.
The coolant pump for the hybrid system may fail, resulting in the hybrid system shutting down, and the vehicle losing power. Dealers will inspect and replace the original motor electronics coolant pump free of charge to correct the concern.
Due to a software issue that affects operation of the torque sensor, the electric power steering may stop functioning. This would make it difficult to steer the vehicle. Dealers will reprogram the power steering control module and instrument cluster module free of charge to resolve the concern. Dealers will also replace affected electric steering components as necessary upon inspection free of charge.
Ford accessory floor mats may interfere with accelerator pedal operation. Dealers will install replacement mats, free of charge to resolve the concern.
The intermediate shafts connect the steering column to the steering gear. Vehicles in areas where salt is used to de-ice the roads are being recalled because severe corrosion can damage the lower intermediate steering shaft. This can cause the upper intermediate shaft to collapse and separate at the lower steering column bearing. Separation will result in complete loss of steering ability. Dealers will replace the lower intermediate steering shaft and inspect the upper intermediate shaft and steering column lower bearing for damage, they will be repaired or replaced as necessary. If the steering column lower bearing has separated, a retainer clip will be installed.
Additionally, Vehicle owners located where salt is not used who have concerns regarding their steering will have a one-time option to have their vehicles inspected and, if necessary, repaired.
The third row seat can experience rust at the seat anchor mechanism mounted to each rear wheel well. As a result, the seat may not fully latch into its seating position. If the vehicle is hit from the rear, an unlatched seat may increase the risk of injury. Dealers will install new third row seat latch striker mounting brackets to correct this concern.
On certain vehicles, the torque convertor output shaft may fail, resulting in complete loss of power to the drive wheels. This vehicle stalling condition increases the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the torque convertor to correct this concern. The Ford recall number is 11S25.
On vehicles equipped with 17-inch steel wheels, one or more wheel studs may break. If this were to occur, a vibration could develop and the wheel could separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. To correct this concern, dealers will inspect the rear brake discs and replace them as necessary. Additionally, the wheel lug nuts will be replaced on all four wheels. Some fuel tanks may not have consistent welds between the fuel tank and the fuel filler neck, affecting the strength of the joint. In the event of a severe rear impact, an improper weld can result in a crack in the joint. This could illuminate the Check Engine Light, cause a fuel odor, or allow fuel to leak out. Any fuel leak increases the risk of a fire. Dealers will replace the affected fuel tanks to correct this concern. This recall is scheduled to begin on August 15, 2011. The Ford recall number is 11S20.
