Question: Mass Airflow Sensor & Retainer Ring

Svc Eng Soon light was on ... mechanic at Dealer says the Mass Airflow Sensor (screen) & ring were missing. Can these parts just fall off? Where would they go? (Would they just fall on the ground; or would they go into the tube leading to the engine?
