Question: malfunctioning gas needle

if my gas needle is not working and the car is idleing funny what could be the problem

if my gas needle is not working what could be the problem i turn the car on and the gas needle drops all the way down when there is allready gas in the car and the dummy light comes on

sometimes it can mean a bad gas cap. happened on my 2005 malibu.
