if the oil pressure gets too low, does the engine shut down ?
I had the oil changed at a quick lube place. About 10 min after I left the engine shut off at a stop light. I started it up again to get through the intersection and it shut off again. Coasted to a safe place and checked the oil; it did not register on the dip stick, and oil was pooled around the front of the engine. Called the oil change place and they sent someone out. He raised the car and discovered that the seal on the oil filter had failed.
Put another filter on and followed him back to his place. No "knocking" is heard and no smoke from the tailpipe. The car has 124,000 miles on it. He indicted that it was probably ok because the cars today have all kind of electronic safety switches, such as the oil pressure sensor, that shut down the engine so you don't have serious damage when oil pressure gets low. What do you think? Should I have this checked out by the dealer?
