You generally have 1.5 gallons of fuel left when the light comes on, and approximately 15-20 miles before the car completely runs out. Though this may seem like a decent amount, it's never good to take a risk and drive too far when the fuel light is out. In fact, making sure the light never comes on is better for your car in all aspects.
