My 2006 VW GTI is making a very loud screeching noise anytime that my car is on and I dont have my foot on the gas, so basically when it's idling. My check engine light is on also. What does that mean and what do I need to do?

the check engine light will need to be "scanned" as the very first step. some parts stores do this free, however,
the noise needs to be diagnosed ASAP. suggest a shop that specializes in VW and they will have the software to see why the check engine light is on.

I have the same exact problem. I was told it was the transmission first. Then the clutch barring. I've had the clutch barring fixed and the problem still persists. If you find anything out, please let me know. Thank you

It was the crank case breather valve. It ended up being a recall so your dealership should fix it free! I was so relieved once they finally figured it out and fixed it! :) Hope this helps!
