I have a 1997 Chrysler Sebring Conv. with the 2.5L V6 with the Autostick Trans. It was driving fine then on my way to work this morning as I was exiting the fwy, a loud grinding/banging noise was coming from the engine compartment. I was barely able to get the car off of the offramp. It was hesitating to go into gear with more loud banging/grinding noise. I coasted down the street to a service station and reverse and drive don't engage. In reverse I hear the sound of something spinning/whining. If I manual put the Autostick into 3rd. I can get the car to move but i haven't attempted to drive this way. It sounds like my transmission is history but could it be something else?

you had an internal failure. will probably have to be rebuilt.

Could this cause the engine not to turn over. This happend to a car I am looking at getting for my daughter. The owner has all maintenance history, well taken care of. But had a similar clunk and car stopped, now will not turn over.
