Question: looses power

 Rookie

Occassionally engine looses power, but will maintain speed up to 40 mph with full pedal pressed, some backfiring, Then suddenly takes off with full power. Does not happen all the time. Changed gas line filter..

  Backfiring sounds like lean running conditions. I would verify fuel pressure and delivery. The fuel pump should put out a pint of fuel in ten seconds, between 30 to 40 psi with the engine running.
