If it was just the cruise control you were intermittently loosing I would say it could be a brake light switch. But to loose the cruise control, speedometer and get the ABS and Check engine light to come on all these systems require one common input. The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) must be failing. By plugging in a scantool and driving the car the scan tool reads out vehicle speed on the scantool if it has no reading the VSS is bad.I don't see any service bulletin from Volvo but Bret who works here at Repairpal is a Volvo Master Technician and I am sure will add information if he knows of a common problem with this particular model and year of Volvo.

There is a very good chance that your ABS Control Module is bad. It's very common, and this is one of the symptoms. Have your mechanis replace the ABS Control Module, or in some cases you can have it repaired. Search online for "Volvo ABS Control Module Repair" and you will see what I'm talking about. I can't vouch for any of the repair companies, but I can almost guarantee that the module is the problem.

I had similar issues. I had the ABS module 'rebuilt' and haven't had any issues since - over a month ago. Rebuilding is much less expensive than purchaing new. Search the internet for module rebuilding firms. You'll save lots of $$.

This happened to my 2000 v70xc - it ended up needing a new alternator.
