These vehicles have been recalled because their interior door handles may fail to return to their stowed position after use. In the event of a side impact, the door may unlatch, increasing the risk of injury. Dealers will inspect all four interior door handles and either repair or replace them free of charge.
Because of a manufacturing issue, the fuel pump may fail prematurely due to improper nickel plating of certain internal components. If the fuel pump were to fail the engine would stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will replace the fuel pump on affected models to correct this concern.
The Push-to Start/Stop button may be pushed inadvertently causing the engine and vehicle to turn off unexpectedly and the vehicle to stop, increasing the risk of a crash. If a crash were to occur with the vehicle off the airbags and seatbelt restraints may not function as intended, increasing the risk of injury. Dealers will relocate the Push-to Start/Stop button and reprogram the Powertrain Control Module to correct this concern.
Certain vehicles are being recalled because the upper intermediate steering shaft could separate resulting in loss of steering control. This recall includes models previously recalled under campaign #13V-385, these vehicles may have been incorrectly repaired. Dealers will inspect and replace the upper immediate shaft if necessary. If the steering column lower bearing has separated, a retainer clip will be installed.
Corrosion due to salt exposure on the fuel tank can lead to a fuel leak in affected vehicles. Near an ignition source, leaking fuel can catch fire and endanger passengers and property. Ford has not yet developed a remedy but will correct the issue when the remedy has been finalized.
The Restraint Control Module (RCM) is the "brains" behind the airbag system. Portions of the module are coated to help prevent moisture intrusion. The coating can crack and when exposed to humidity the printed circuit board may short circuit. This could cause one or more of the airbag system components not to function as expected in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury. Replacement parts are currently not available, a second notification letter will be sent when they are and dealers will perform the necessary repairs.
Air may have become trapped between the laminated layers of glass that make up the windshield, reducing clarity and visibility for the driver.
In the affected vehicles, the halfshaft retention clip may not have been properly installed. As a result, without prior warning the halfshaft may move outward and disengage from the linkshaft while driving. This would result in loss of engine power to the drive wheels. Dealers will inspect the vehicles to make sure that the halfshaft is properly retained. If it is not, dealers will replace the linkshaft and also replace the halfshaft if it shows evidence of spline damage.
The recliner mechanism for one or both front seats may have been improperly welded to the seat frame. As a result, the seatback may become loose or lean, increasing the risk of injury in the event of certain types of crashes. Dealers will replace the affected seatbacks to correct this concern.
All late model vehicles with an automatic transmission have been designed so the shifter cannot be moved out of the park position unless the brake pedal is depressed. Certain MKZ vehicles are being recalled because the transmission range sensor may not function correctly, allowing the transmission to be shifted out of park without fist applying the brake pedal. This could cause the vehicle to roll unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash. Dealers will update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software to correct this concern.
