2000 GMC Sonoma Q&A

2000 GMC Sonoma Question: light switch

the light switch went out, replaced it twice. the switch smokes for a second, works for a short time then goes bad. the only thing that wont work is the dash gauge lights. everything else still works. What is wrong???? can't figure it out ,guessing a short somewhere -
Answer 1
It sounds like there is to much current flow on one or more light circuits controlled by the head light switch. You can try the following: using a wiring diagram and an amp meter, power up one lighting circuit at a time and note the amp draw. Look for which circuit has an excessive amp draw. That circuit may have a short to ground causing the headlight switch to smoke. Being the dash lights are not working you may want to begin your tests with that circuit. -
