Coolant Leak & Engine Overheating on Oldsmobile Cutlass

I've had the waterpump replaced twice. periodically the car will overheat, and then dump a load of coolant. i fill it up, and it acts like normal for a while. then once again, repeats the coolant loss. no leaks, just dumps coolant, and then it's fine for a bit.
I've had this problem twice in the life of the car. I have it in for a tune up and the mechanic recommends I change the water pump.
