Oil leaks are sometimes difficult to trace. Oil always leaks downward and is often blown rearward as you drive. It may be necessary to steam clean the engine to locate the leak or add a florescent dye to the oil to pin point the leak. Dye is great in that you can pin point the leak source if the engine is pretty oily, but works best if the engine is cleaned off fist with a degreaser.
The timing chain cover is on the passenger side of the engine, I've seen leaks there. Valve cover gasket is the most common leak (easiest/cheapest to fix). Ensure he oil filter is tight. You say the oil is arround the drivers front wheel. That is the transmission side of the engine. Could the leak you have be transmission or power steering related or even a torn CV boot allowing grease to be thrown from the axle as you drive?

I have something similar on my 99 SL manual. In my case I'm suspecting its a break in the transmission pan somewhere, but that's what I'm here to try and figure out.
