lack of power, poor fuel mileage on 1998 Dodge Ram 1500

truck has 102k on it, doggy & lithargic always and to the extreme when pulling trailer(empty or loaded). hard pulling a hill even without trailer and knocks. backfired through intake(throttle body?) half dozen times coming up a hill the other day and almost died, thought it was going to let me sit. had an engine misfire(code 304) did plugs, wires, cap, rotor about 2 months ago. help! have friends with same year 5.2 and they scream. someone said maybe intake leaking? front o2 sensor(s)?

drop fuel tank and check to see if fuel filter is still attached and pipe is not rotted off
