Is the sound from the front part of the vehicle, like from the engine area? Or is it more from the center area like from the trans or exhaust system? Maybe you can get out of the car and listen and see where it is coming from, and then I can help you more effectively. Noises are often tricky to detect. I actually use a stethoscope, like a doctor, when I work in the shop to find the source of noises and knocks etc. Let me know what you find.

I have Explorer with the additional climate system for the 3rd row seats. The sound is coming from the actuator. It get's worse if you turn on the back air. for Explorer should be easier to replace by pulling the cup holder on the driver side at the 3rd row seats level. below that there is an actuator.
